Meditation: Choose your own Spiritual Retreat

Filed under: Meditation — Vivien on December 8, 2010

There is nothing too mystical about choosing a spiritual retreat.  You do not have to go away to a remote island; it is quite simply a place that a person chooses to hibernate from the world, away from everyday life, including family and friends.

A spiritual retreat is essential when the everyday stress of life has torn at a person’s mind and body or if there is a need to think about the loss and gains of that day and to plan tomorrow.

The human body burns up its energy during the daytime and sometimes continues to bother a person through the night.  The result is a poor night’s sleep and a feeling of being burnt out the next day.

Depression can sometimes be the result of fatigue.  A person will carry on day after day hoping their feelings will improve, sometimes swallowing a couple of vitamins in the hope they will make their symptoms disappear.

One of the simplest ways to help your body heal itself is to retreat into a bedroom or a spare room to sit listening to soft calming music. Although music is not essential it can help to relax the mind and body.

To have a relaxing half an hour, just make sure you have turned off the telephone and your personal mobile, you are not in the middle of the ironing or mowing the lawn and young children are either at school or in bed.

Sitting on a firm chair (not on a bed), allow yourself to physically feel your body relax from the soles of your feet to the top of your head.

Close your eyes, feel the soft music enveloping you, the worries of the day may try to intervene, but gently push them away and just let your mind wander.

Open yourself up (you should learn how to open up and to close yourself down, seek assistance if you are unsure) and mentally ask your spiritual retreat to envelope itself around you, while healing your mind and body

When you have rested for what appears to be a few minutes, open your eyes and mentally thank your spiritual retreat and its energies for your healing, drink a glass of water and later when retiring to bed, enjoy a good night’s sleep.

Note: do not worry if it takes a little while to become accustomed to relaxing your body.
